What are Reiki Symbols?

Reiki symbols are sacred symbols referred to by their intention. Originating from the Japanese language, the term Reiki means “spiritual life force energy”, and the term comes from combining the words “rei”, which means spiritual, or higher, power, and “ki,” meaning energy. If you would like to learn more about Reiki symbols and how they can be used to heal yourself or others, consider enrolling in a Reiki class from The Whole Life Center of Kansas City.

Usui Reiki was developed long ago in Japan by Mikao Usui, a Japanese spiritual teacher using Reiki symbols as a form of healing. Reiki symbols are the keys to connecting to higher levels of healing by a Reiki practitioner. Students of Reiki learn how and why the Reiki symbols are used and how they work. They know to give Reiki healing energy from God, enabling them to embody spirituality. They come to a deeper understanding of the Divine, experiencing the power for themselves. These students learn the symbols before or during Reiki classes and are asked to memorize them. Each one represents a particular kind of energy. The stimulus/response process is activated when the Reiki symbols are used, and the names are spoken.

In a Reiki II class, a student receives three Reiki symbols: the Power symbol, the Mental/Emotional symbol, and the Distant symbol. A Reiki practitioner activates them during a ceremony/meditation called an Attunement or Placement. Once we receive empowerment from the Second-Degree Reiki symbols, we are more connected to the source of Divine Guidance, intelligence, and power. Usui/Holy Fire Reiki uses the Power, Mental/Emotional, Distant, Usui Master, and Holy Fire symbols. All but the Holy Fire symbol may be referred to by the Japanese name, or kotodama, which means “the secret power of words.” The Japanese names of Reiki symbols are secret to indicate respect for the symbol.

Karen Harrison at Whole Life Center in Kansas City has a mission to empower others to grow physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. With her guiding you, she will empower you to heal physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Practitioners use the Reiki symbols during a session by visualizing, drawing, or naming them:

  • The Power Symbol.
    • This Reiki symbol is used to increase or release blockages.
    • It is identified by drawing a coil representing chi – the transfer of energy through the body.
    • It is commonly used at the start of a Reiki session to boost Reiki power, and at any point, it is needed.
    • This can also be called on when working to clear negative energy.
  • The Harmony Symbol.
    • Used when in need of purification and mental and emotional balance.
    • The general meaning is ‘God and man become one’.
    • Drawing of this Reiki symbol resembles a wave cresting and ready to crash or a bird’s wing.
    • Often thought of as relationship help in addition to harmony.
    • This Reiki symbol is good for memory, kicking bad habits or additions, or aiding in physical ailments with an emotional component.
  • The Distance Symbol.
    • The general meaning of this symbol differs from the other Reiki symbols; ‘the origin of all is pure consciousness’.
    • Used to send Reiki energy across time and space
    • Can be used to heal old wounds or send Reiki to the future ahead of events to manifest the best results.
    • Reiki experts say to call on this symbol on a day-to-day basis to encourage past and future healing within one’s body
  • The Master Symbol.
    • Nourishing and enlightening, and one of the most sacred of all Reiki symbols
    • The healing powers of this Reiki symbol are all-encompassing – healing the upper chakras, the lower chakras, and the aura.
    • This is the empowerment symbol meaning ‘great enlightenment’ or ‘bright shining light’.
    • To call this Reiki symbol, you can draw it, visualize it, or draw it with your third eye. Meditation is a good way to activate this symbol.
  • The Holy Fire® symbol.
    • The Holy Fire® symbol represents spiritual fire and is used to clear malicious spirits, release negative energy, and promote healing.
    • It is the most potent Reiki symbol, representing the Holy Spirit and the practitioner’s connection to God.
    • It provides purification, healing, empowerment, and guidance.

Reiki symbols help the Reiki practitioner focus on the healing energies that come from God. Whenever Reiki symbols are used, a person’s higher consciousness responds by altering and directing the way the life force energy flows.
