Reiki symbols are used by teachers and students of the Japanese Healing technique known as Reiki. The symbols serve to activate the flow of energies within the body to maximize healing results. Each symbol is associated with a particular type of energy. In many Reiki traditions, the symbols themselves are kept secret and are only revealed to students as part of taking a Reiki class. Practitioners use the symbols during a Reiki session by drawing, visualizing or speaking their names. 

 

The power symbol represents the life force or flow of energy in the body, otherwise known as “chi”. It is used at the beginning of a session to activate energy within the body. It is also used to eliminate negative energy. It is similar to a coil.

 

The harmony symbol means “God and man become one” and is drawn like a bird’s wing or a cresting wave. It represents the balance of life, like yin and yang. The left side represents the logical brain and the right represents the emotional brain. It is used in Reiki for healing of emotional issues, to bring peace and to calm emotions. Some practitioners find it useful for study or in overcoming bad habits. Others have found headache relief using this symbol.

 

 The distance symbol is one of the most powerful symbols used in Reiki. Its meaning is “having no present, past or future” and it is used to send positive energy into any phase of time. Those experiencing wounds from their past may find it helpful in healing trauma and helping them move forward in life. Practitioners also use it to send positive energy forward in time in anticipation of coming events. 

 

 The master symbol is the most sacred of all the Reiki symbols, meaning “Great enlightenment” or “bright shining light.” It is an empowerment symbol and has the most transformational power of all the Reiki symbols. It is complicated to draw, and is often used in attuning new students. As an aid to achieving spiritual enlightenment, it is said to heal the whole soul of those who use it. Many practitioners believe it can help bring them closer to God.

 

The Holy Fire® symbol represents spiritual fire, and is used to transmute negative energy, release malicious spirits, and promote healing of the body, mind, and emotions. It is the most powerful Reiki symbol, representing the Holy Spirit and the practitioner’s connection to God.
