Sacred Reiki symbols were developed by Mikao Usui, a Japanese spiritual teacher, as a form of healing. Reiki means “spiritually guided life force energy.” This energy comes from God, the Creator, the Universe.

Usui/Holy Fire® Reiki is a sacred healing system that connects people to higher levels of awareness. The symbols are used to direct Divine healing energy for balance and healing.

Name, Meaning & Intention of Reiki Symbols

There are four primary symbols used in the practice of Usui/Holy Fire® Reiki. The symbolic name of each sacred Reiki symbol represents its purpose – Power, Harmony, Distance, Usui Master and Holy Fire. The symbols, when activated, empower spirituality, helping the practitioner reach a higher level of consciousness, enabling them to direct healing energy to help others.

With the exception of the Holy Fire symbol, the Japanese names of the symbols, or kotodama – which means “the secret power of words” – can be used. The kotodama are secret to indicate respect for the symbol.

Power Symbol – Used to clear energy blockages (Byoki) in a person’s environment and seal healing energy at the conclusion of a treatment session.

Harmony Symbol – Also referred to as the Mental/Emotional) symbol, is important for healing emotions and thoughts, such as fear, anxiety, grief, and sadness. Also effective for healing addictions, sleep problems and learning abilities. It is also used to catch and diffuse negative energy coming from others.

Distance Symbol – Healing can be sent to people and animals and all living things. Used to send Reiki healing energy across space and time to resolve past and future issues. Works best when intended “for the highest good of all concerned.” When combined, the Harmony symbol and the Distant symbol can be used to help heal past traumas. Video

Usui Master Symbol – This symbol represents enlightenment. It embodies everything that is Reiki and is used only by Reiki Masters. It provides very powerful grounded energy, healing deeply and completely. The Master Symbols empowers Power, Harmony, and Distance symbols to develop and strengthen a person’s self-awareness, personal growth, spiritual development, and intuition.

Holy Fire® Symbol – The most powerful of all the Reiki symbols, this symbol is used for purification, healing, empowerment, and guidance. This symbol represents the Holy Spirit and a person’s connection to God. It diffuses negative energy, releases malefic entities, and promotes healing of the body, mind, and emotions.  Holy Fire empowers by giving vitality, confidence, safety, peace, and a feeling of being loved. 

Empower, Increase Energy, And Clear Blockages With Reiki Symbols

Reiki symbols enable the Reiki practitioner to focus on the healing energies that come from God. Whenever Reiki symbols are used, a person’s higher consciousness responds by altering and directing the way the life force energy flows.

Spiritual Healing with Reiki Symbols

The ‘laying on of hands’ as a method of clearing energy blockages that attach to a person or place. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or above the body to facilitate the healing process. Further reading 

Reiki Symbols Classes at Whole Life Center

In my beginning classes on Usui/Holy Fire® Reiki, I teach students how to activate and use the sacred Reiki symbols, Power, Harmony and the Distance. By connecting to the Reiki symbols, they are able to direct the healing energy toward others. 

Students of Reiki learn how and why the Reiki symbols are used and how they work. They learn to give Reiki healing energy from God, enabling them to embody spirituality. They come to a deeper understanding of the Divine, experiencing the power for themselves.
